In a much more "pop" vein is THE PRAETORIAN (Outlaw Entertainment), written by Ricardo Villa, Tony Hobdy, and Jason M. Burns and drawn by Ramon Espinoza. Four immortal Praetorian guards, each present at Christ's crucifixion, come together to stop a serial killer with the aid of an F.B.I. agent who might be the key to the murders. This book has all the earmarks of Burns' work; I'm not sure anyone in comics does a steadier job of producing books that truly feel like a film put to paper. PRAETORIAN is no different; strong female lead, grand conspiracy, savage murders... it all just has the overpowering smell of summer tentpole. (That isn't a bad thing, mind you.) The art is shaky, though, at times letting down the writers. In some cases it feels a bit too "bright", like it doesn't belong to a story about grisly serial killings. It can also feel a bit stiff as well. Still, the book is slickly produced and works as an attractive package for the reader... or a producer looking for proof of concept for their next project.
